Objectives

A case study exploring the build and development of the popular switch game Animal Crossing New Horizons.

Roles and Responsibilities

My role in this was to take a critical look at Nintendo's Animal Crossing, utilizing my knowledge as both a designer and potential player to recreate an elevated game experience after weeks of closely studying the game under the tutelage of industry professionals.

Challenges

  • Designing for a game system I am unfamiliar with and a game-game type I don't play.

  • Building a new game experience when one already exists
(not building from the ground up).

  • Learning how to work step by step in an unfamiliar design territory.

Outcomes

  • Gained a better understanding of the scope of UI/UX design in the world of gaming.

  • Refocused my workflow to better assist in decisions and look more critically into the choices I make and how I am able to present and explain them.

  • Built a foundation of UI/UX principles to grow and expand my creative toolkit.

I sought out this learning experience in the hopes of building upon my basic knowledge of figma and simply sharpening those skills. In the end, I found that what I had gained was a reignited passion for story-telling and the love of each little step in the design process, from prototyping to seeing a design become fully fleshed out. I am leaving this course not only with an invaluable set of knowledge to bring with me in my creative journey but also an ultimate goal to find a home within the gaming industry- something that truly combines my love for both story-telling and visuals.
